Chapter Fifteen

KATE WATCHED TAYLOR WALK AWAY, he had saved her daughter. He had been hurt in doing so and she had repaid him by slapping him. What kind of person had she become that she would hit another person? Her emotions were raw from thinking about what she dared not reveal about Mark. Then he went and kissed her. She had lied to him too. The kisses had meant so much more than she admitted, more than she deserved.

She picked up her skirts and rushed after him. “Lord Hannington.” She remembered his earlier request. “Taylor?”

He stopped but didn’t turn. She stepped forward and touched his back. Tingles ran up her arm just as they had spread through her body during their kiss. She stepped around him and saw the light pink handprint on his face. She reached up and touched it. “I’m so sorry. There is no excuse for what I did. I wasn’t angry with you, truly. I don’t know what is wrong with me. Maybe Mark was right. I—I was never enough.”

Tears gathered in her eyes as she thought of one of the conversations from her marriage.

Mark stood in the doorway to the parlor looking her over. The look on his face was utter contempt. “Your brother was eager to be rid of you. Look at you. Can’t even manage to give me the heir you promised. What good are you to me if you cannot even do that?”

She hung her head. “I’m very sorry, my lord.”

His laughter bruised her already fragile emotions. “Sorry doesn’t give me the child I need, now does it? What a waste you are. You will never be enough. Never amount to anything. You are broken and now damaged goods. If we divorced, I could seek a new wife who could give me the child I need. But then, you do allow me to seek out my companion without complaint which another woman might not. If you do not produce an heir for me within a year, I will be forced to divorce you and find a woman who can do the job.”

She was drawn from her thoughts as her stomach rolled and she gagged. She turned from Taylor and stepped away from him just in time to lose all the contents of her stomach. She groaned.

“Kate?” She heard him step toward her. She wiped her mouth and held out her other hand to stop hid approach. She clamped her eyes shut then turned and sat on a stone bench and put her head in her hands. A sob rose in her throat and she fought it. She had shed enough tears for Mark. He had defiled their marriage with his choices, his actions. She shook off the thought. She had already been sick once just thinking about it.

She felt heat as Taylor sat next to her on the bench. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you so badly.”

She shook her head as his hand touched her back. Warmth spread through her. “It wasn’t you.
